PHIL308: Philosophy of Science

So I lost my other 308 essay in a hard drive crash. It happens. I was able to rescue this one from an email archive though. I'm glad I could - I think it's probably one of my best pieces of writing, even though it was “only” a 300 level course.

But more on the essay itself. In it I analyse the applicability of Popper's falsificationism to historical sciences such as evolutionary biology and geology. I find that the aims of these sciences are importantly different from Popper's paradigm science, physics. Similarly, the investigatory techniques which can be used in these sciences are very different as well. For these reasons they do not qualify as Popperian science. I argue that this is a weakness in Popper's definition though, rather than a criticism of the subjects themselves. Essay available here.
